The Dire State of Hunger in New York City
In the city of opportunity, it’s unacceptable that nearly 1.3 million New Yorkers, including 1 in 4 children, face food insecurity. Even before COVID-19, far too many households were struggling to afford essentials like rent, utilities, and food. Now, with the expiration of pandemic-era supports and rising costs, food insecurity has reached crisis levels.
At MUNA Social Services, we believe no one should go hungry. Our team is committed to ensuring that nutritious, culturally appropriate food reaches New Yorkers in need, free of charge.
Since the pandemic, visits to food pantries have surged by 75%. For many families, food is the first expense to be cut when budgets are tight, even though 80% of struggling households have at least one working adult. Hunger doesn’t just affect individuals—it impacts entire communities, from health to education and economic stability.

Community Collaboration in Times of Crisis: Supporting Neighbors in Need
On January 5, 2025, tragedy struck Miller Avenue, between Atlantic and Fulton Avenues, as a fire engulfed three homes, displacing 10 individuals. This devastating incident left families in our community grappling with the loss of their homes and possessions, creating an urgent need for support and care.
In response to this crisis, MUNA Social Services was honored to partner with Community Affairs Officer David Teran of the 75th Precinct to bring relief to those affected. On January 10, 2025, Officer Teran visited our warehouse on Pitkin Avenue and loaded his cruiser with fresh fruits, vegetables, and non-perishable food items, ensuring that those impacted by the fire received immediate access to nourishing meals.
This act of compassion highlights the power of community partnerships in addressing unforeseen challenges. At MUNA Social Services, our mission is to serve and support our neighbors, particularly during times of hardship. We extend our deepest gratitude to Officer Teran and the 75th Precinct for their dedication to the well-being of our community.
Together, we can make a difference, one act of kindness at a time. Let’s continue to stand united in uplifting those in need, fostering resilience, and building stronger bonds within our neighborhood.
This January, MUNA Social Services proudly launched the Adult Social Connection, a program designed to provide seniors with a welcoming space to gather, connect, and enjoy meaningful interactions. Held once a week, this initiative has quickly become a cherished gathering, bringing together 20+ seniors each session.
Each week, seniors come together to share meals, engage in conversation, and build friendships in a warm, supportive environment. More than just a social gathering, the program ensures that every participant leaves with a wholesome pantry bag filled with a week’s worth of nourishment, helping them maintain their well-being beyond the session.
“The joy on their faces is priceless,” shared one of our volunteers. “For many, this is the highlight of their week, a time to feel connected and cared for.”
MUNA Social Services is committed to fostering community support and dignity for our seniors.
Together, we continue to uplift and serve those who have given so much to our communities.
MUNA Social Services is excited to announce the opening of our second Aim High Academy branch in Jackson Heights this February! Following the success of our Brooklyn location, this expansion brings our academic and personal development programs to even more students in grades 3 through 10.
At Aim High Academy, we go beyond academics by offering Homework Help, Enrichment Programs, and Social-Emotional Support, ensuring students receive the guidance and encouragement they need to thrive. Our mission is to foster a nurturing environment where students build confidence, resilience, and a passion for learning.
With limited spots available, we encourage families to enroll early and take advantage of this transformative program.

MUNA Social Services: Spreading Hope This January
In January 2025, MUNA Social Services stepped up in a big way—distributing over 300,000 pounds of food worth more than $500,000 to over 25,000 people across New York, New Jersey, and Delaware. As families faced the challenges of winter, our dedicated volunteers ensured that no one had to go hungry.
Essential staples like rice, lentils, cooking oil, onions, potatoes, and fresh produce were provided to those in need, bringing warmth and nourishment to thousands of households. Stories of gratitude echoed throughout our distribution sites—from a mother in the Bronx relieved to have food for her children to an elderly man in New Jersey finding comfort in cooking a familiar meal.
“This means my children will eat tonight,” shared Aisha, a mother of three, highlighting the impact of our efforts.
None of this would have been possible without our incredible volunteers and supporters. Together, we are strengthening communities and ensuring that no one is left behind. As we embark upon the new year, MUNA Social Services remains committed to serving those in need—one meal, one family at a time.
Thank you for being part of this journey of giving and hope!
