Program Overview
Nourish the Soul is MUNA Social Services’ (MSS) youth mentorship initiative dedicated to supporting young people in New York City’s juvenile detention centers. Recognizing that every young person deserves guidance, encouragement, and a path forward, this program sends qualified mentors and educators directly into juvenile facilities to build meaningful relationships with youth who are navigating some of the most challenging moments of their lives. Through consistent mentorship, structured programming, and ongoing community support, Nourish the Soul empowers young people to develop their character, discover their potential, and envision a future full of purpose.
Why It Matters
Youth involved in the juvenile justice system face compounding barriers — interrupted education, limited social support, and few positive role models. Without meaningful intervention, these young people are at heightened risk of long-term disconnection from opportunity. Research consistently shows that mentorship is one of the most powerful tools in breaking this cycle. When a young person has a trusted adult in their corner — someone who shows up consistently, listens without judgment, and believes in their ability to grow — the trajectory of their life can change. Nourish the Soul exists to be that force of change for youth across New York City.
What We Offer
Nourish the Soul provides a structured, holistic curriculum that addresses the full needs of young people — intellectual, emotional, and social. Program components include:
- Character & Ethics Development — Building integrity, self-discipline, accountability, and respect through guided discussion and real-world application

- Mentorship & Relationship Building — One-on-one and group mentorship from trained, compassionate educators who are committed to each young person’s growth

- Community Connection — Linking youth with supportive networks, positive community spaces, and resources that help them thrive
Impact on Youth
Every young person who walks through the doors of a juvenile facility carries with them untapped potential. Nourish the Soul has already reached over 20 young people who have demonstrated a sincere desire to transform their lives. Program participants report greater self-awareness, improved emotional regulation, and a stronger sense of hope for the future. By meeting youth where they are — physically, emotionally, and circumstantially — MSS is helping to interrupt cycles of hardship and replace them with cycles of growth, community, and possibility.
Strategic Collaboration & Resources
The success of Nourish the Soul depends on a dedicated network of qualified mentors, educators, and community partners who share MSS’s commitment to youth empowerment. The program provides all necessary educational materials and supplies to participants, and collaborates with community organizations to ensure that meaningful support is always within reach. Donations to this program directly fund mentor stipends, program materials, and community support services.
Future Outlook
MSS is committed to expanding Nourish the Soul’s reach across more juvenile facilities in New York City and beyond. Upcoming plans include growing the mentor network, deepening partnerships with community service providers, and developing programming that maintains long-term connection with young people as they move forward in life. In alignment with MSS’s core principles — empowerment, equity, innovation, collaboration, responsiveness, accountability, and compassion — Nourish the Soul will continue to serve as a lifeline for youth who need it most, offering not just support for today, but a foundation for a better tomorrow.
